Fraunhofer IPA awards the prize DIE OBERFLÄCHE
In 2026, the renowned Stuttgart surface technology prize "DIE OBERFLÄCHE" will once again be awarded for innovative applications and technologies within all disciplines of surface technology. The award ceremony will take place on the first day of the trade fair in the STG.ExpertForum.

First prize was awarded to the LAMA system, a joint development by SLCR Lasertechnik GmbH and Dörken Coatings GmbH & Co. KG. The laser-based system cleans bulk metal parts such as screws, nuts, and clips in a single step, thereby replacing chemical cleaning processes combined with mechanical blasting. The jury awarded second prize to BIA Kunststoff- und Galvanotechnik GmbH & Co. KG for the Remap concept, which for the first time enables Class A high-gloss surfaces made from recycled plastics in decorative electroplating. Third prize went to Enayati Oberflächentechnik GmbH for the AgTherm high-temperature silver coating system, which replaces gold as a contact material in power electronics at sustained temperatures above 200 °C.
Surface technology is one of the most important key technologies in industrial value chains. It plays a significant role in the degree of innovation and progress in many industries. Since 2012, this position has been recognised with the awarding of the Stuttgart Surface Technology Prize "DIE OBERFLÄCHE".
Production processes and products are increasingly measured by factors such as energy efficiency, sustainability, degree of innovation, their contribution to competitiveness and their industrial feasibility. The prize honours the most innovative applications and technologies within all disciplines of surface technology. Particular emphasis is placed on innovations that are described as "enablers" - i.e. those without which the introduction of certain products or technologies would not be possible.
The following criteria have to be considered when awarding the prize
All disciplines of surface technology are considered. Whether in electroplating, coating technology, thermal spraying, chemical or physical vapor deposition – all individuals, companies, or research institutions that have made an innovative and sustainable contribution to the surface technology industry are invited to participate in the competition.
